The Inner Path of Photography

We yearn for the taste of the sacred…and through our cameras discover it, the world, and ourselves.

“Derek Walcott, Poet of the Caribbean”

“For every poet, it is always morning in the world,” he said. “History a forgotten, insomniac night; History and elemental awe are always our early beginning, because the fate of poetry is to fall in love with the world, in spite of History.”

I seek,

As climate seeks its style, to write
Verse crisp as sand, clear as sunlight,
Cold as the curled wave, ordinary
As a tumbler of island water.

– Derek Walcott, “Islands”

“I come from a place that likes grandeur; it likes large gestures; it is not inhibited by flourish; it is a rhetorical society; it is a society of physical performance; it is a society of style,” he told The Paris Review in 1985. “I grew up in a place in which if you learned poetry, you shouted it out. Boys would scream it out and perform it and do it and flourish it. If you wanted to approximate that thunder or that power of speech, it couldn’t be done by a little modest voice in which you muttered something to someone else.”

“Higher Selves”

We speak of wanting to live from our higher selves

To treat all with honor
see their best side
always act from compassion and love.

I know, it can be a challenge.

This poem is for you, my friend, who sighs and says
“So peaceful where you live!”

Yes.
I agree.

Easier to connect with that high saintly self
After stepping out on a cliff to discover…

This.

I am grateful.

Stop.

Breathe deeply.

Allow the peace within.

You are still a sacred being
Here to celebrate life.

At this moment – and throughout your day today –

Know that simply being you

Being Love

makes a difference.

Relax. It is a noble act to share your pleasure.

“Turn Around”

One can often become so seduced by something pleasurable,
that one becomes consumed by it.

So it was as I shot photographs of a beautiful sunset over the ocean.
Shifting tones of reds, shimmers on the water, each moment a new experience!

The light dimmed. I felt satisfied.
I had captured what I wanted, and turned to leave.

And saw this.
A scene behind me that captured my heart far more deeply than the classic sunset. The wind blown grasses, the curves of the hill, lovely subtle color behind…
I felt my spirit leap over and upwards into the clouds.

Only time for two fast frames and then the light was gone. But the thrill of that sight, the inner awe, will remain with me each time I see this image.

Turn around. Remain open.

That which best feeds your heart may come to you in unexpected places.
