The Inner Path of Photography

We yearn for the taste of the sacred…and through our cameras discover it, the world, and ourselves.

My “I Dream of Galveston” images in Austin Gallery Show

This past Friday night, October 7, was the opening reception for The Gathering of Photographers juried show at Flatbed Press/O2 Gallery, a unique art space in Austin, Texas.

Pleased that four of my images from the series, “I Dream of Galveston” were chosen for the show, and looking forward to celebrating with the other photographers and seeing their work, I drove up for the evening from Houston.

What a nice surprise to find that my work had been selected for an “Honorable Mention” award – and playfully nicknamed by the jurors “Mighty Beach Series.”*

* They were fun, but don’t be fooled: they’re serious, and seriously accomplished:

Jurors included Pulitzer Prize winner Skeeter Hagler,  photojournalist Kevin Vandivier,  designer Kelley Toombs, and photographer/ Pulitzer Prize judge Gary Fong. (See summaries here)
A huge thank-you to all of my sponsors and supporters who helped me participate in this show – you know who you are – I appreciate you greatly!

The show will be hanging until November 4th. There’s a great diversity of images, themes, and photographers – Enjoy if you’re in the area –

All images from the show, 20″ x 24″ matted and framed, are also for sale – contact Flatbed Press Gallery or me for details…

“Anticipation”

I lay my wing
As a bridge to you

So that you can join us
Singing.

– Hafiz

i park my car
walk down the sandy path
deeper into the dunes, closer towards the ocean

my feet sink
feel the softness…umm…

hurry hurry i think
i want to see the sea!

it shouldn’t be this hard, it seems
So close, but  requiring energy and strength

i can’t wait for that
delicious feeling
when I turn that corner go around that fence get up to the top

aah

yes

It’s actually a pleasure, this small hill to the sea
sensuous journey of anticipation

not knowing what the view will bring
but trusting in its beauty

Now to remember…and live my life the same

“You are the Artist of Your Life” program inspired teens at Kennedy Place, Houston

"Bicycle Rider" by Jasmine, Kennedy Place Houston

This June and July, I had the pleasure of teaching my 6-week class “You are the Artist of Your Life: Exploring Life Direction Through Photography” to a group of teens age 10-17 from Kennedy Place, Houston, Texas.

The class is designed to expose teens to the art of photography, as well as introduce tools to look at their lives and futures. Each week this summer teens learned about the roots of photography and looked at a diversity of  other photographers’ work, shot how they felt and saw their world, and reflected, wrote, and began creating visions and dreams for their own lives.

The photograph above is one of the fine images that came from these creative young photographers, and is the first of images in a short slideshow which reflects the highlights of their work.

A framed collage of images also hangs in the Kennedy Place Community Center.

“You are the Artist of Your Life: Exploring Life Direction Through Photography – Teens” was sponsored by Houston Housing Resources, Inc. through a grant from the Simmons Foundation, and by contributions from Taos Mountain Radiology (Paul Johnson, MD) and Christina M. Gucwa, Attorney at Law.

Many thanks  for the opportunity to inspire and support these creative, passionate teens!

A special thanks to Amy Goldstein (HHR) who conceived of the “Black Frame Project” of which this program was a part.  The “Black Frame Project” invites and supports artists to teach in the communities, recognizing the potential of arts to inspire, uplift, and create positive change.

Peter Turnley Images – Istanbul

Looking for some international photo workshops, I came across this great image from Peter Turnley.
Here’s the image from his Facebook page….
Or go to his website…

A powerful reflection of a man in prayer, plus all of the other things going on in the mosque around him.

All pray in different ways…and this photo captures it and the sensibility of Istanbul beautifully and wordlessly.

I want to go back to Istanbul! and do more shooting…This inspires me.
