The Inner Path of Photography

We yearn for the taste of the sacred…and through our cameras discover it, the world, and ourselves.

“Surrender”

I invited her to lunch
and a ride home after our swim.

“Well,” she said, with that twinkle in her eye.
“I’d rather we meet later for a drink and a smoke.”

My 80+ friend, this guardian angel
She’s gone.

What to do with the sadness and loss
Seeing it coming does not make it less.

Surrender.

To my images of memory
her tottering to the lanes
One day nearly blown over by the rain and the wind
Still swimming for life
(although this time did scare her)

Surrender.

To the laughter we shared
trading life’s moments of absurdity and love
Bodies, men, street signs
all taken lightly.

She would want me to surrender.
To heartache, then possibilities.

“Go on out there,” she’d say to my crazy ideas, “Go do it!”

I will.

“Play”

Girl_playing_on_slide_image

Can Lightness come to play today?

Laughter
Unguarded pleasure
Delight, contentment, bliss

The feeling of body and mind totally immersed
in the pure joy of being.

Please stop. Right now.

Take a  deep breath, and hold it.
Then let it out, feeling your energy flow from the top of your head to the tips of your toes

Relax your shoulders
Soften your heart

(Your heart is there, you know. Just waiting.)

Think of a time when you were happy, playful
Free from the heavy cares that you’ve shouldered so well

Remember from your childhood, last month, today  – no matter!
See the scene, and feel it.
Let your body and mind enjoy.

Can you do it? Will you?
Deepen, deepen
aaahhh

Now hold that feeling
Smile.

And walk into your world.

Play!

“Unexpected”

No_Cookies_Left_Image

The cookies are gone, espresso savored
Warm feelings from an evening with friends.

Playful posting of photo, just taking a break, and then

Tender memories of a passionate time.

A different photo
A man who could capture
layers of emotion through a simple cup and saucer.

Images and coffee
Friendship and love

A rich life.

Nick Waplington, “Other Edens”

Nick Waplington, “Other Edens”, 1994

My favorite photo book of the day –

Nick Waplington places his head and body atop/within many spaces that aren’t the usual.

Other images from the book and an interesting post can be found on  Chris Pittman’s blog (the fish are a bonus). Frieze Magazine has a review deconstructing the deepest darkest meanings and associations –

But you really need the book in hand.

Enjoy the wonderful introduction by Marianne Wiggins and then experience the “Where’s Wally?” type journey as you turn the pages of unique image after image, Nick appearing in the  most unlikely places. Then you can appreciate the mind and sensibility of this creative, slightly wacky artist.

I love how Nick is “Honoring Inner/Creating Outer” by allowing himself to express inner feelings and associations to places in an unusual way. He’s playful, yet also serious about his photographs. And he has certainly taken the concept of “travel photography” far beyond the expected.
