The Inner Path of Photography

We yearn for the taste of the sacred…and through our cameras discover it, the world, and ourselves.

Walking and Photography – Matt Green walks NY

Matt Green is walking the streets of New York – all of them.

And talking to people, taking photographs along the way.

A wonderful example of a man who is living in the moment, absorbing life, and sharing his experience through photography.

See the NY Times article and a wonderful short video made by Matt here…

“It’s more like I’m having an experience than making a picture.” -Cy Twombly

From the New York Times obituary upon the death of Cy Twombly, July 5, 2011:

“In the only written statement that Mr. Twombly ever made about his work, a short essay in an Italian art journal in 1957, he tried to make clear that his intentions were not subversive but elementally human.

Each line he made, he said, was “the actual experience” of making the line, adding: “It does not illustrate. It is the sensation of its own realization.” Years later he described this more plainly. “It’s more like I’m having an experience than making a picture.”

The process stood in stark contrast to the detached, effete image that often clung to Mr. Twombly. After completing a work, in a kind of ecstatic state, it was as if the painting existed and he barely did anymore: “I usually have to go to bed for a couple of days.”

Amen. Exactly.

RIP,  Cy. I’ll miss you.

“I used to be afraid to fly…”

“I used to be really afraid to fly, Mr. White says. “My palms would sweat for days, thinking about it. After I made my first record, in 2001, my fear was half of what it used to be, and I think it was because I accomplished some of the things I wanted to do. I think you’re only fearful of dying if you haven’t lived.”

(“In Greenwich Village, a Songwriter’s Garrett” NY Times 5.6.2010, about singer-songwriter Kenny White‘s NY apartment)

Today’s article in the NY  Times caught my eye, because I’m still looking forward to having another artsy house and studio in the future. I loved the interview, the sensibility of the musician, and pictures of this Greenwich Village home…and then the totally unexpected icing on the cake was this quote.

A fine sharing of a very personal experience and a perspective I agree with.

Plus listen to his music…it’s great!

NPR.org – On Sondheim: The Musical-Theater Legend At 80

For artistic inspiration!

Here’s a wonderful interview with Stephen Sondheim, Broadway composer (among other things)…interesting thoughts about creating, being an artist in the world…enjoy especially the last 5 minutes where he talks about “the creative moment” and getting totally lost in the flow of time.

There are also audio clips of some of  his music…I love the last song in the interview “The Best Thing That Has Ever Happened…”

Stephen Sondheim is 80 this year…lots of tributes happening in New York this week…and he’s just finished a new show!

May we all be as alive and creative throughout our lives…

Interviews like this really inspire me and also remind me of the great respect I have for creative people at the top of their game…may this interview support your art and life also…
