The Inner Path of Photography

We yearn for the taste of the sacred…and through our cameras discover it, the world, and ourselves.

New Photo-Zine for the Mind and Soul – Jason Eskenazi

“Dog Food for the Mind and Soul” – (NY Times, Jason Eskenazi, new zine)

I love this new photography and writing creation – highlighted in the New York Times “Lens” blog – a newspaper started by the very talented Turkish photographer Jason Eskenazi and friends – other international photographers and writers – that came out of a frustration with the limited scope of how photo students were being taught to see and think.

I’m inspired by it all – the overall concept, the very personal approach of  the interviews (and how they are handwritten), fun attitudes, and – most of all – the fact that this zine is meant to be touched, handled, passed around in its physical form, not as a digital screen product.

More! More!

(Yes, of course, I want a copy!)

I want to fly
he said,

And so he did.

As we each can
In our own unique way.

Art Rock: Songs inspired by artists

Rene and Georgette Magritte with their dog after the war

I love to see the interplay of different art forms. It’s wonderful to see how we can all inspire each other, drawing from the same creative Source.

Here’s a fun and interesting article (with videos embedded) about songs that have been written about or are inspired by various painters. From Picasso to Warhol to Frida Kahlo – and reflecting all kinds of music and styles – the Muse arises, and uniquely, tribute is paid.

I was trying to pick a favorite, but as I return and visit the videos, it varies day-to-day. One day I like the repetitive words and music of The Modern Lovers with their unique perspective in “Pablo Picasso,” another day I’m into the sweetness and sentimentality of Paul Simon’s “René And Georgette Magritte with their Dog After the War,”  and then a third time the simple caring and humor of Michael Marra in “Frida Kahlo’s Visit to the Tay Bridge Bar” makes me happy.

And what about John Cale? He keeps popping up on the radar these days. His “Magritte”  is an update of his signature style, and works for me.

Fisun Guner’s comments about songwriter and song are informative and frame the theme beautifully. She has also included the “worst” of these types of songs – I had to laugh at some, and don’t really care about the others.

It’s enough to see and hear the masters that feed my hungry inspirational soul.

Just finished reading/absorbing this book from cover to cover…
“Georgia O’Keeffe and Her Houses: Ghost Ranch and Abiquiu”

I had intended to just browse while eating breakfast – and then I was totally hooked. The photographs are beautiful, the detail of information is impressive, but most wonderful is the way the two authors have created a perspective and told a fascinating story that I have not seen or heard before.

This is more than a picture book of Georgia O’Keeffe’s homes. It is  a reflection of the unfolding of a life, creative and personal, and tells/shows quite beautifully how building a home and furnishing it can support, enrich and align with a person’s being.

The test and images flow gracefully as we see O’Keeffe’s views from her home, placement of windows, and minimalist furnishings, and then see the images she painted from her inspirational setting. Many quotes from her letters are included, and the author’s knowledge of what was happening at the time in Georgia’s personal and professional life deepens the story told.

Generous attention has also been paid to Maria Chabot, whose talent and work were crucial to the restoring the home in Abiquiu, and who was an amazing woman herself. Examples: Ms. Chabot was an advocate for Native Americans, renting buses so they could bring their art to sell in Santa Fe, then founded the immensely successful Santa Fe Indian Market, AND managed a major ranch for 20 years, AND fit in Georgia O’Keeffe’s 1800s home renovation/rebuilding, creating, recommending, and decision-making from a distance as O’Keeffe was in New York most of the time!)

A wonderful reading, sharing, visioning experience. Enjoy…
